2014 District VIII Leadership Award Recipient

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VIII Board would like to announce that the recipient of the 2014 Leadership Award is Portland State University's (PSU) President Wim Wiewel.

The Leadership award recognizes a district member institution president or head, chancellor, educational system head, or CEO for outstanding efforts to promote the understanding and support of education. The nominees must have demonstrated the following:

  • Created a vision for an institution and inspire others to accept that vision,
  • Established a positive image for the institution, and/or successfully led an institution through turbulent times,
  • Increased an institution's stature in its community and its educational service to the community,
  • And be innovative and encourage an institution's personnel to be innovative and take risks.

In just five years at the helm, President Wiewel has transformed PSU into a nationally-recognized urban university with a clear vision for civic leadership, student access, global excellence, educational opportunity and effective resource management. He received a Climate Leadership Award from Second Nature, a national nonprofit, in 2013 for demonstrating innovative and advanced leadership in education related to sustainability and climate mitigation and adaptation.

Dr. Wiewel played a key role in 2013 in convincing Oregon lawmakers to restructure higher education, creating independent accountability and flexibility for PSU through its own Board of Trustees. He has succeeded in raising the university's profile and performance and its growing reputation is resonating with constituents. Private gifts to the university have more than doubled in the past three years.

Co-nominators, PSU Vice President (Advancement) Francoise Aylmer and Executive Director (PSU Alumni Association) Tom Bull, have said, "President Wiewel is an inspirational and innovative leader. We believe he is exactly the type of leader for whom the CASE District VIII Leadership Award is designed."

CASE VIII Board Chair Cheryl Nations echoes these comments saying, "Dr. Wim Wiewel is an well deserved recipient of the CASE Leadership Award. It is always an honor to recognize outstanding achievements that exemplify standards by which we (CASE VIII member institutions) compare our work, and educate and inspire ourselves to greater success."

Dr. Wiewel received his award at the 2014 CASE District VIII Conference in Vancouver, BC in February.
